Chris Wilmarth (1943–1987) was an American sculptor and artist renowned for his minimalist steel and glass sculptures. His works often explored themes of light, space, and materiality, creating contemplative and ethereal forms. Wilmarth's art was heavily influenced by literature and poetry, particularly the works of Stéphane Mallarmé, which inspired his acclaimed Breath series. His sculptures have been exhibited at prominent institutions, including the Museum of Modern Art in New York and the Whitney Museum of American Art. Wilmarth received a Guggenheim Fellowship in 1975, recognizing his contributions to contemporary sculpture. His work resides in major public collections, including the Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden and the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art. Despite his untimely death, Wilmarth’s innovative approach to form and light continues to influence artists and sculptors.
