David Treuer is an Ojibwe Indian from Leech Lake Reservation in northern Minnesota. His books include Little (1995); Hiawatha (1999); The Translation of Dr Apelles (2006); Rez Life (2012); Prudence (2016); and The Heartbeat of Wounded Knee: Native America from 1890 to the Present (2019), a finalist for both the National Book Award and Carnegie Medal. His other awards and honors include a Pushcart Prize, two Minnesota Book Awards, and fellowships from the NEH, Bush Foundation, and the Guggenheim Foundation. His essays and stories have appeared in Granta, Harper’s, Esquire, TriQuarterly, the Washington Post, Lucky Peach, the New York Times, the Los Angeles Times, Orion, and Slate.com. He divides his time between his home on the Leech Lake Reservation and Los Angeles, where he is professor of English at USC.
