Evan S. Connell (1924-2013) created a body of work over more than 50 years of writing that is remarkable for its breadth, beauty, and importance. His books include the epic poems Notes from a Bottle Found on the Beach at Carmel and Points for a Compass Rose; the novels Mrs. Bridge and Mr. Bridge; Son of the Morning Star, a biography of George Armstrong Custer; and Deus Lo Volt!, an imaginative account of the Crusades. His final book, a collection of stories called Lost in Uttar Pradesh, was published in 2008.
