Jay Hopler (1970 - 2022) was born in San Juan, Puerto Rico, and earned degrees from New York University, The Johns Hopkins University Writing Seminars, and The Iowa Writers’ Workshop.  His first collection of poetry, Green Squall, was chosen by Louise Glück for the 2006 Yale Younger Poets Prize, and his second collection, The Abridged History of Rainfall (2016), was a finalist for the National Book Award. His other awards included a Whiting Writers’ Award and a Rome Fellowship in Literature. He was Professor of English at the University of South Florida.
