The Picuris Pueblo received support from Lannan to regain their aboriginal lands that had been used for decades by corporations to extract micaceous clay. After the latest company to mine clay in that area went bankrupt, the tribe successfully regained their land from the US Forest Service. In doing so, the burden of reclamation required by the state of New Mexico passed to the Picuris Pueblo. In spite of this cost, the tribe was ultimately successful in preventing further destruction of their sensitive cultural resources and began a healing process that is designed to return the land to its natural state.
Today Picuris Pueblo, located in northern New Mexico, sustainably accesses their micaceous clay, which is used for cultural, spiritual, and utilitarian purposes.
