Cultural Freedom Award for An Especially Notable Book

The Lannan Cultural Freedom Award for An Especially Notable Book was established in 2014 to honor nonfiction works of particular relevance to the current historical moment. The Especially Notable Book Award recognizes writers whose work is of particular scholarly or journalistic quality, and also has purpose in providing ideological tools to inform and support struggles for cultural freedom and social, economic, and racial justice. The award is given to writers who show potential for continued outstanding work.

Candidates for the awards and fellowships are recommended to the Foundation by a network of writers, activists, publishers, and editors. Nominators are geographically dispersed and serve anonymously. The final determination of recipients is made by the Foundation’s cultural freedom committee.
